1. SOLO SONG - to be sung a cappella
Embraceable You by George and Ira Gershwin
This classic standard from the "Great American Songbook" era was a huge hit when it was sung by the wonderful Ginger Rogers in the 1930 Broadway musical Girl Crazy. It has been recorded by countless artists since then and remains one of the better known American popular songs.
In this portion of the audition, the singer will demonstrate several important vocal skills. First, since it is to be sung a cappella, the singer will demonstrate that she/he can audiate (hear in your head) the harmonic context of the piece without an accompaniment present. In other words, can the singer maintain tonality.
Secondly, the singer should interpret the song. The lead sheet is just an outline of the most basic version of the song. The singer may vary the written rhythm to highlight a lyric, vary and/or embellish the melody (in the vocal jazz style), or otherwise present their personal version of the ballad.

This portion of the auditions features the "shout chorus" from an original 12-bar blues by emeritus professor Larry Lapin, founder of the award winning and world-famous Vocal Jazz area at the University of Miami (FL)
Learn the voice part you ordinarily sing. If you are a Soprano 2, please learn the Mezzo Soprano part. If you are an Alto 1 and would like to also record the Mezzo Soprano part, that is allowed.
